A single-herb liquid extract of dried rhizome of Nardostachys jatamansi, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Jatamansi grows on Himalayan alpine slopes between three and five thousand metres, in Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Uttarakhand, as a low tuft of paddle-shaped basal leaves above a rhizome wrapped in a mat of reddish-brown fibres — jata is Sanskrit for matted hair, the kind an ascetic wears. This is the spikenard of antiquity, the nard of the Song of Songs and of the alabaster jar, carried down from the mountains and traded across Persia to Rome, where a pound of it cost a labourer's year. The scent is heavy, earthy and animal, closer to damp forest floor than to anything floral.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Nardostachys jatamansi is listed on CITES Appendix II and is genuinely threatened in the wild by over-collection; we buy only from permitted sources. Not for use in pregnancy.
